The difficulties encountered by the operators:

  • Engagement of the mechanical clutch was difficult - mechanical jam ups were common. At times required additional man power to engage.  
  • Engagement leverage was not from an ideal position
  • The clutch would slip during engagement, due to inadequate adjustment of clutch
  • Constant adjustment of clutch was required to ensure good engagement and full Torque transmission

The Band-Aid, pneumatic actuator engaged the lever,  but clutch remained out of adjustment.

II. The Band-Aid: To counter the problems faced with using the Mechanical Bell Housing Clutch, Pneumatic Actuators were installed.

The actuators temporarily solved the problem of:

  • Lever arm engagement
  • Engagement level was still not in an ideal position

It did not solve the problem of:

  • Clutch slip during engagement, due to inadequate mechanical adjustment of clutch
  • Adjustment of clutch needed to ensure good engagement and full torque transmission

Additional Problems encountered:

  • Broken Mechanical Linkages, Yoke, Levers
  • Additional cost for Actuators and controls

The Solution: Logan Hydraulic Clutch is self-adjusting  with push-button engagement

III. The Solution: To eradicate the Problems faced with using the Mechanical Bell Housing Clutch and with Pneumatic Actuators, the customer decided to switch to a Logan Bell Housing Clutch
 

With the Logan Pneumatic or Hydraulic Actuated Clutch, it resolved the following problems:

  • No unnecessary slippage of clutch due to Self-Adjusting Disc Pack
  • Full Torque transmitted
  • No adjustment needed
  • Eliminated mechanical linkages,  levers, yokes, and actuators

Overall, with the Logan Clutch, it provided:

  • Lower operation and maintenance costs
  • Self-adjusting disc pack
  • Ease of operation with remote actuation

Logan Direct Drive PTO Clutches Enhance Bow Thruster

Steering a commercial boat or large yacht can be similar to driving a heavy car with bad brakes. Its difficult to stop, and response to the rudder is slow. This poses no problem in the open sea, but it can be real challenge to maneuver the vessel in a congested marina or when docking. This is where a bow thruster comes in. A bow thruster consists of an open-ended tube that runs through the underwater sections of the hull near the bow and perpendicular to the keel. A propeller mounted at some point inside this tube can rotate in either direction. The helmsman selects the rotational direction and actuates the propeller. As a result, the bow thruster sucks a solid stream of water in one end of the tube and forces it out of the other, pushing the bow sideways and augmenting the rudder to make steering more responsive.
