Logan vs. Mechanical PTO’s

The advantage of the Logan Clutch is its ability to engage and disengage the water jetter hydraulically, through
push-button activation, eliminating the use of a mechanical hand lever or yoke type clutch engagement system, which dates back to the early 40’s. Smooth, Logan softstart™ engagement eliminates clutch downtime due to over and under adjustment. And since the Logan clutch is self-adjusting, clutch engagement is smooth and
consistent after hundreds of hours of use.

The mechanical clutch requires the operator to “hand engage” a clutch, which opens up the opportunity for untrained operators to slam the clutch into gear at high rpm’s. Another mode of failure is when operators will over or under tighten the adjusting collar on mechanical clutch to the point where the clutch is too loose and slips to failure or is over tightened and never disengages. “Making the switch was easy”, says Richard Alderson of the FS Solutions, Hammond Indiana Office, “we pulled the old Mechanical Clutch and drive ring, along with all of the linkages, levers and yoke, and replaced the clutch with a Logan RP 314 Series clutch.” The Logan design uses the same shaft, drive ring and taper as the mechanical clutch, making the changeover relatively quick and easy. “All we had to do was install the Logan Bell Housing PTO Clutch, a power pack, and an on/off switch, and within a few hours we were ready for service” says Alderson. Logan Clutch would like to thank FS Solutions, of Hammond, IN for allowing them to retrofit the new self-adjusting PTO on the Jetstream X-Series unit.

Logan clutches are simple to operate. Push-button activation engages the clutch from a control panel or remote operating device. Hydraulic or pneumatic pressure via the Logan hydraulic power pack and maniford, clamps the cylinder and piston inside the clutch, which then engages the friction and steel separator discs with a Logan SoftStart™ feature - smoothly engaging the clutch. When pressure is removed, release springs separate the clutch, giving it ample running clearance while disengaged. Push-button, remote activation from a control panel, or cab is now possible.

Logan self-adjusting Bell Housing PTO clutches have been standard equipment on all Oshkosh H-Series Blowers manufactured since 2005. Hundreds of Logan units are in the field, operating at a high level of excellence and readiness for major U.S. Airports such as Chicago O’Hare, Boston Logan, Cleveland-Hopkins, Buffalo Airport, and more. The Logan Advantage: The advantage of the Logan clutch is its ability to engage the snow blower drivetrain hydraulically (for factory blower trucks), and pneumatically (for pre-2005 H-Series field retrofits). This eliminates the use of a mechanical hand lever or yoke type clutch engagement system, which requires frequent mechanical adjustments – many times during snow removal conditions, which leads to downtime and inconsistent operation. For example, mechanical clutches that were improperly adjusted, often led to disc wear and eventual clutch failure – requiring the truck to be taken out of commission, requiring many hours to pull the blower trucks drivetrain – and replace the clutch entirely with a new disc pack and linkages. A major harbor tug operator in the US had a need to up-grade some of it’s old Detroit Diesel driven Gensets. This operator has the hydraulic requirements for the boat and deck winches provided by two hydraulic pumps mounted on the front of two redundant Gensets. (This is an alternate solution to main engine mounted hydraulic pumps and allows for the hydraulic systems to be run at the dock and without the mains being operated.)   In normal operation, one genset provided all of the ships power. The second genset provided all of the ships hydraulic requirements. In an emergency where additional electricity or additional hydraulic pump flow was required, the second unit could be used to provide additional resources. In the event of a failure, one genset could provide enough electricity and hydraulic flow for the boat to still operate until the first unit could be repaired, keeping a valuable piece of equipment operating and providing revenue. OEM Manufacturer of Construction Equipment Works Together with Logan Application Team  The Challenge: Before OEM contacts Logan to solve system issues which are causing hydraulic pump failure   Most OEM manufacturers of mobile equipment use hydraulic piston pumps to control machine movements and attachments. In many cases these hydraulic piston pumps are driven remotely from the engine’s auxiliary PTO drive via a slip yoke shaft. Machine Operators must be able to turn these pumps on and off when the vehicle is driven from job site to job site - in order to prevent over speeding the pump when the engine is running faster than the pumps normal hydraulic work speed. There is also the potential for all the pumps to engage at once, which would cause the input torque rating to be above the engine specifications causing hydraulic system and pump failure. In this situation, customers were going beyond the limits of the machine and pump specs – the OEM had to do something quickly -they contacted Logan.  The Solution: After Logan adapts off the shelf SAE PTO Clutch to meet specific OEM customer need In most cases the pumps are already defined by the customer, which requires Logan to fit with small envelopes, sandwiching the Logan Clutch in between the pump and engine. After considering all of the options with Logan application engineers, the OEM selected an SAE PTO 1200 Series Clutch. In less than a week, extensive lab and field tests were conducted. R
